Instrumentally Sound

★★★★★★★½☆☆ Melodies Not So Easily Forgotten

Avishay Mizrav

It is not easy to make an instrumental album, let alone a good one. Well the difficult to do, has been done on Forgotten Melodies. Avishay Mizrav delivers a unique musical experience that from the opening track, “Knight Templar” lets the listener know that they are in for a listen that will be anything but normal. There is a very wide variety of musical influences on this album, southern rock inspirations are used quite a bit and used well as part of the overall progressive nature of the music. I can’t comment on lyrics, because, well as stated before, there are none, but being the huge fan of prog rock that I am, lyrics aren’t always needed to convey the inspirations and emotions behind a song.

On a musical standpoint, I’m impressed by the songwriting and instrumental abilities showcased on this album. The guitar work is calculated and complex, changing timing and mixing different techniques makes this anything but repetitive—which can often be the case on instrumental albums. The best I can think of as far as comparison, can be instrumental parts of Dream Theater, Rush with some slight southern rock influence, and even some Vai-like guitar influences.

Well done.
